Luboš Perek is celebrating his 100th year

Founding fellow of the Learned Society and its doyen, astronomer doc. RNDr. Luboš Perek, DrSc, is celebrating his 100th birthday on 26 July 2019. He is an indelible part of history as the person who helped define cosmic space, he was the first to point out the issue of cosmic waste and was also a teacher to the most important Czechoslovak astronomers. Let us express our respect and admiration of the extraordinary scientific career of a person who worked tirelessly and continues to work. The Learned Society wishes Mr Perek health, optimism and joy in the oncoming years.

The Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic has appealed to the Hungarian President to support academic freedom

On Friday 19 July the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and the Learned Society of the Czech Republic sent a letter to Hungarian President János Ánder, in which they state their concerns regarding the situation in respect to management and funding of scientific activities in Hungary. An act, according to which not the Academy of Sciences, but a thirteen-member political committee, will decide on research, funding of scientific activities and establishment or closure of scientific workplaces, will come into force on 1 September.

The loss of Learned Society Fellow prof. Josef Koutecký

We regret to inform that prof. Josef Koutecký, a fellow of the Learned Society, a renowned physician and the founder of paediatric oncology in this country, passed away on 5 July 2019 at the age of 88. He founded paediatric oncology here in 1964 and a separate paediatric oncology department was then established at the Faculty Hospital in Motol, Prague in 1978.

The loss of Learned Society Fellow doc. PhDr. Slavomil Vencl, DrSc.

We regret to inform that PhDr. Slavomil Vencl, DrSc, fellow of the Learned Society and Czech archaeologist, passed away on 23 June 2019 after a long period of illness at the age of 82 years. He initially specialised in the Neolithic and Eneolithic periods, particularly the stone industry of these periods, and subsequently focused on the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic periods.

Ing. Jan Pardon, CSc., a businessman who arranged sponsorship donations from the PRO.MED.CS. Praha, a.s. Company for the Learned Society, passed away on 15 June 2019 at the age of 80 years after suffering a serious illness. We honour his memory.

The loss of Learned Society Fellow prof. Ing. Karel Ulbrich, DrSc.

Prof. Karel Ulbrich, fellow of the Learned Society and internationally renowned scientific expert in the field of polymers as drug carriers, passed away on 19 June 2019 aged 72. He and his team extensively developed the field of polymer carriers utilising water-soluble polymers based on HPMA (N(2-hydroxypropyl)meta-crylamide), i.e. targeted delivery of drugs to diseased cells.

XXV. General Assembly of the Learned Society of the Czech Republic

The ceremonial part of the XXV. General Assembly of the Learned Society, at which the Medals of the Learned Society of the Czech Republic Societas Scientarium Bohemica Ad Laudem et Honorem and the awards of the Learned Society of the Czech Republic in the “Young Scientist” and “Grammar School Student” categories were presented, took place on Monday 20 May 2019 in the Great Hall of the Carolinum.

Bolzano lecture by prof. Kip S. Thorne

American physicist Kip S. Thorne, recipient of the Nobel Prize for 2017 for detection of gravitational waves, visited Prague at the invitation of he Learned Society. He held a series of “Bolzano lectures” and a lecture titled “Creating Gravitational-Wave Astronomy” for the Learned Society on 15 May 2019 in the Blue Auditorium of the Carolinum. The lecture was held with the support of the Karel Janeček Foundation and was received very enthusiastically.

XXV. General Assembly

07.05.2019

The Czech Learned Society is holding its XXV. General Assembly on 20 and 21 May 2019. The Learned Society’s awards in the “Young Scientist” and “Grammar School Student” categories, Teaching Awards for pedagogic workers who promote interest in science and research at grammar schools and the Learned Society’s medals for meritorious contributions to the advance of science will be presented during a ceremony on 20 May at the Karolinum. Lectures by renowned scientists will also be presented. The second day will be reserved for the working part of the meeting, in the building of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.
